A Typical Monday
Here's a glimpse of what a "typical" Monday would be like at one of the 6th grade Summer Institutes. Although with all of the excitement and activities going on, we must warn you that no day is really "typical."
| 7:00 AM | Wake up, gather books and materials, and have breakfast with the group. After talking about yesterday's field trip to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and the Baltimore Aquarium, the students switch to talking about the weekend and the class assignments for the day ahead. |
| 8:00 AM | Biology. The science teacher gets the students to continue their talk about the field trip and encourages them to relate their observations to classroom discussion. |
| 8:55 AM | English. the English teacher helps the students shift gears and focus on the book they have been reading. Through class discussion and other co-curricular activities, the students examine the main themes addressed in the novel and explore how the lessons are applicable to everyday life. |
| 9:50 AM | Creative Expressions Workshop. Today's workshop focuses on improvisational dance. The instructor has no difficulty encouraging the students to express themselves through movement. |
| 10:45 AM | Math. the students are learning the concepts of pre-Algebra and Geometry that will prepare them for the upcoming school year and ultimately for taking Algebra! |
| 11:40 AM | Lunch. at first the students were overwhelmed by the range of choices available in the dining hall, sometimes leading to lunches consisting mostly of ice cream. But by now, they've learned more healthy habits and most choose a balanced meal...although ice cream is still a part of it. |
| 12:35 PM | P.R.I.D.E. Our personal growth class, P.R.I.D.E., is always a highlight for the students. Today, the teacher has introduced and exercise requiring students to work together to solve a communications mystery by analyzing clues. |
| 1:30 PM | Latin. This teacher has answered the question, "Why do we need to take Latin?" long ago. Today's lesson in vocabulary shows the relationship between the English language and Latin. Students begin to ask questions about Ebonics and a lively debate occurs. |
| 2:25 PM | Independent Learning Center (ILC). ILC, which is also known as the computer class, the teacher assists students as they use computers to write their papers and introduces them to the Internet for reference use. |
| 4:00 PM | Free time. Many options are available, but the clear favorite is the cool dip in the pool - the perfect way to beat the heat and relax. |
| 5:00 PM | Dinner. Mmmmm! |
| 6:00 PM | Evening Study Hall, supervised by teachers and counselors, enables students to spend time on their homework and prepare for the next day of classes. |
| 7:30 PM | Evening Activities. A full schedule of structured activities, including aerobics, flag football, volleyball, natural sciences, dance, cooking, game clubs, photography, choir, and many other activities encourages the students to relax with each other. |
| 9:00 PM | Wrap up Day, Shower and Bed Time. Lights out at 10:00 PM.. The students are able to wind-down from the day's activities, shower, and get ready for a good night's sleep so that they are prepared for the full schedule that awaits them the next day. Counselors are also available to review the day's events and to help solve any problems or conflicts. |
