Middle School Program

PFL's Middle School program extends year-round in order to maximize contact with our students and their families. The two components of the Middle School Program include the Residential Summer Institutes, which occur in the middle of the summer, and the Saturday Tutoring and Enrichment Program (STEP), which is held throughout the school year. Further descriptions of these programs are provided below.

Residential Summer Component

The mainstay of our learning communities is our five-week, residential summer program. The students begin at the end of fifth grade and return for the summers after the sixth and seventh grades. Students attend PFL summer institutes, by year of entry at Messiah College, Millersville University, and Bryn Mawr, respectively.

During the summers, students are enrolled in rigorous and engaging core classes in mathematics, language arts, science and Latin. These subjects are supplemented by workshops in computer education, creative expressions, debate and current issues, a structured personal  growth course, and nutritional and physical education. In addition, students take a number of field trips, especially on weekends, to sites of cultural and social significance, or recreational interest.

School Year Component

As a follow-up to the summer enrichment activities, students participate in the Saturday Tutoring and Enrichment Program (STEP), which is offered to students locally in their own communities over the course of their 6th, 7th and 8th grade years. This program consists of extended enrichment, tutoring support of in-school subjects, academic and recreational field trips, and community service projects.
